Silver Cross has been lovingly crafting nursery products since 1877 – and while much has changed over the years in our fabric development, our commitment to quality remains the same.
Helen Smith, Silver Cross’ Fabric Design Manager, sits down with The Edit to share insights into the world of product development, from the innovative materials used in our award-winning range to the impressive properties they feature to keep your little one safe and comfortable every step of the way.
What types of fabric do we use at Silver Cross?
Bringing a product to life is a collaborative process that spans months of development between our Fabric and Hardware teams, in close partnership with our Technical department and factory partners. Every detail is meticulously considered to ensure our fabrics deliver style, functionality, and durability.
We work with a wide variety of fabric qualities across our range, treating each collection as a unique development. For instance, a single pram can incorporate up to 15 different fabric types – each of which are carefully selected and engineered to serve a specific purpose, contributing to the overall performance and aesthetic of the product.
What sets Silver Cross’ fabrics apart?
For nearly 150 years, Silver Cross has been loved for its signature tailoring and precision engineering. Every material we use is carefully chosen with purpose – from its origin and production to its appearance and performance. We select fabrics that are not only beautiful, but which are built to last. Plus, many of our fabrics are washable too so you can enjoy them for years to come, whether you're using the product again for your next child or passing it on to someone else.
Tell us about some of the properties the fabrics have.
The beauty of the fabrics we use here at Silver Cross is that they serve so many purposes. They not only look amazing, but they’re developed for longevity and hold properties to keep your baby safe and comfortable too.
Soft-touch bamboo
Bamboo is not only beautiful, but also impressively functional too. We incorporate it into key touchpoints across our range, from prams and car seats to bedside cribs and sleepwear. Soft-touch bamboo is antibacterial and hypoallergenic, making it ideal for delicate newborn skin. It’s also thermo-regulating, keeping your baby comfortable by helping to maintain a consistent body temperature through every season.
Crease-resistant jersey
Jersey is such a versatile fabric, which is why it’s used across so many of our prams and strollers. It offers a seamless look thanks to its anti-crease finish and also provides season-round climate control with its durable, water-resistant finish and UPF50+ protection. Many of our jerseys are also crafted using recycled plastic bottles, which would have otherwise ended up in landfill.
Breathable mesh
Your child’s safety and comfort are always our top priorities. That’s why we thoughtfully integrate mesh into our designs, to enhance breathability and keep your little one cool and comfortable. All of our strollers and pushchairs feature a mesh peep window in the hood, allowing you to check in on your baby while also improving airflow. Our Cove carrycot goes a step further, with a panoramic mesh ventilation window in the base that’s perfect for keeping your newborn comfortable on warmer strolls.
Performance fleece
Our footmuffs are crafted with down-like thermal fillings, performance micro-fleece or luxury velour material to keep your child warm and snug during the colder months. The outer layer features a water-resistant finish, offering protection against rain and damp weather. For added versatility, the footmuff apron can be easily removed and transformed into a cosy, padded seat liner that’s perfect for milder days.
